Video Games – Video Games Ratings
Nobody needs any introduction to video games. There are all kinds of video games in the market and also on the net. But how do you know which game is good for your children and which one is not. As a parent it is your genuine concern.
You definitely do not want your children to see or do anything that is beyond their age even if it is only a video game. Children up to the age of an adult are very impressionable. Moreover, unless they are told they can hardly make out between the right and the wrong. They are always looking up towards their parents and their teachers for guidance.
Follow The Ratings For Healthy Entertainment
Playing is the worldly right of every child which should not be denied, but, there should be certain checks. This is exactly what has been done to differentiate between different video games. All video games have compulsorily to depict two things on the cover, front and back, to become legitimate video games. All video games have to show the rating awarded by the Entertainment software ratings board which was established in mid 1990 to guide users to pick the video game suitable for their family. After watching a video game the ESRB declares it fit for a particular age group. For this purpose it has declared six age group ratings. The second thing all video games should depict is the content material available in the game.
The six rating categories are as follows
• Early Childhood (EC) – children of age three and older can play such games which are considered absolutely safe.
• Everyone (E) – meant for age six or older, these games may contain very harmless violence or mild harsh language.
• Everyone 10 and older (E10+) – these video games are suitable for children of age ten or older. Such games include mild violence, suggestive themes and mildly harsh language.
• Teen (T) – meant for teenagers of age 13 or older, because these video games contain blood, some violence, suggestive themes and some harsh language as well.
• Mature (M) – these games are suitable for children of age 17 or older only. Such games include scenes of intense violence, lot of blood, considerable sexual content and harsh language as well.
• Adults Only (AO) – as is clear from the name of the rating, such games are for children of age 18 or older. These games are full of scenes of nudity, violence and bloodshed including graphic sex scenes.
For the video games which do not have any rating at present, an RP rating is given which means Rating Pending. You as a parent can now check the age of your child and match it with the video game you want your child to see. You also have the content to consider which will tell you the other side of the story as well. The content will show what the game contains like blood, mild violence, kid’s humor, drug scenes, comic mischief etc.
