In the past, video games were really considered child stuff. Only children below the age of teens were the ones seen hankering for video games that too on huge machines kept in malls and shops, which advertised such games for children.
They were never the type of mind blowing, involving stories and themes which one sees nowadays. Moreover, with the advent of the CD and the DVD it has gained immense popularity for home use. The games in vogue then were slow to use, on simple themes and more of a mechanical type, which got over in a short time. There was no glamour, gloss and technical polish that we see in the video games of today. At that time, it was a great invention for adolescents but now the character and style of video games has completely revolutionized the world of gaming with some games now being devised entirely for the adults only.
The Classic Vs The Dynamic
There was a time when some of the video games were considered as classics. Since very few inventions had come in the field of video games whatever was thrown in the market was quickly lapped up by gaming freaks. At the time when 8-bit and 16-bit technology was in use around the eighties a lot of popular consoles were in use like the Amstrad CPC, Super Nintendo, ZX81 ZX Spectrum, and Sega Genesis. These classic video games were very simple works compiled by large manufacturers like Atari, Sega and Williams Electronics. To play these classic works you need to have specific hardware and consoles which are not easily available. For this reason a lot of piracy is also done and these classics are sold illegally. However, many new versions of these classics are now in the market.
An important source for the classic gamer is the internet. You can easily download tons of games online. Most of the time you have to pay a fee for the same but some websites also offer free versions of the classics of yore. Children will want to play as long and for whatever price you allow them to. There is no limit as far as they are concerned. It is for the parents to realize what is going to be the line of control. Even if you do restrict the time of play how can you disallow them to do what other children of their age are doing just because of the price. Latest consoles and video games like Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 are expensive games. Even though the price has been considerably reduced latest version of Playstation 3 is anywhere from $40 to $60. And the Xbox is much higher. Every time a new game comes to the market the children want to grab hold of it and play it.
